Our Story
Pianoid was founded by a group of talented physicists, musicians, and professional software developers who identified a significant need for a new type of musical instrument. Many individuals desire the rich and expressive sound of a grand piano but are often limited by the cost, space, and maintenance demands of traditional acoustic grand pianos. While digital pianos offer a more practical alternative, they frequently fall short in delivering the authentic acoustic sound and realistic touch response that serious musicians and enthusiasts seek.
Driven by a passion for musical excellence and technological innovation, our team embarked on a mission to create an electrical instrument capable of producing the sound of a real grand piano. We have stepped beyond traditional physical modeling by introducing the concept of an acoustic instrument driven by digital strings. Our innovative technology combines a real acoustic soundboard with an advanced physical model piano synthesizer. This system utilizes real-time software piano sound synthesis, which directly models the wave processes and the interaction between the simulated strings and the acoustic soundboard. This computationally intensive process is powered by high-performance software leveraging modern GPUs. To translate these digital computations into acoustic vibrations, we have developed a system of actuators attached to the soundboard, along with a precise procedure for their calibration and tuning. Our goal is to provide an accessible electrical instrument that authentically reproduces the sound, touch, and feel of a real grand piano, overcoming the limitations of both traditional acoustic and existing digital instruments. Our technology is patent-pending, reflecting our unique approach to achieving this realistic sound through an electrical instrument.

Our Innovation

This hybrid system utilizes real-time software piano sound synthesis that directly models the wave processes in the strings and their coupling with the soundboard. This computationally intensive process leverages high-performance software and specialized equipment such as GPU. We are also developing AI/ML solutions for automated parameter tuning to accurately replicate the sounds of various pianos and create new timbres efficiently.
